PROJECT SCOPE_ LIQUIFER Systems Group (LSG) presented the outcome of a year-long study for a future European planetary simulator called FIPES to its client, the European Space Agency in October 2006.
The objective of this activity is the concept study of an integrated simulation facility for a planetary exploration habitat allowing mission simulation and research in life sciences, including operational medicine and psychology, environmental research (including life support and associated technologies), exobiology and the interface problems between these fields, in preparation of crewed missions to the Moon or Mars.
The Final Report submitted to ESA comprises several Technical Notes that cumulatively summarize the results of a Definition study of a Facility for Integrated Planetary Exploration Simulation (FIPES). The study addressed all issues to a level of detail that gave confidence in the feasibility of the design and development of the proposed facility.
More specifically, the Report summarizes- The results of an analysis of past, present and future simulators with a view to deriving lessons learned that might be applicable to the design and development of FIPES.
- Simulator missions which identify the types of research and trials that can be conducted in a Core Isolation Habitat (CIH) and an Extra Habitat Activity (EHA) facility,
- The architecture of not only the CIH and EHA facilities but also of the Campaign Support Structure (CSS) and an Educational Support (ES) building needed to support FIPES,
- Issues related to the selection of a site to house FIPES,
- Safety and regulatory aspects governing FIPES operations,
- A development schedule and related costs for Phase B of FIPES development, a
- A commercial evaluation of FIPES.
