PROJECT SCOPE_
In 2001, the European Space Agency endorsed the ‘AURORA Program’ that outlined the roadmap for Europe’s foray into planetary exploration. The primary objective of AURORA was the development of a European long-term plan for the robotic and human exploration of the solar system. The second objective was the search for life on Mars.

EXOMARS is meant to be the first flagship mission under the AURORA program. The goal of the EXOMARS mission is to conduct elaborate biological and geological studies in preparation for future unmanned and manned missions on Mars. This flagship mission mandates the development of a Mars orbiter, a landing module and the EXOMARS ROVER intended to undertake an exobiology mission on the surface of Mars in the 2016 timeframe.

For the development and successful implementation of the EXOMARS ROVER, ESA undertook intensive research and development activities related to the various rover systems including power, autonomy and navigation. Per initial studies, the EXOMARS Rover will be propelled by solar energy. The autonomous design will allow the Rover to use optical sensors and special software for navigation. It will use a lightweight compact drilling system, a system to collect and evaluate soil samples and different scientific instruments to search for traces of life on Mars.

Vienna based LIQUIFER Systems Group (LSG) participated in the early-on ESA Rover studies and helped create 3D computer renderings of the EXOMARS Rover to enable visualization of the integrated rover systems.
