Nilamani Mohanty is a space telecommunications expert with more than 35 years of experience. He retired as the Deputy Director of Space Applications Center (SAC), Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). During his tenure with ISRO, he led the Research and Development (R&D) of cutting-edge communication technologies for the space and ground segments for India. He oversaw payload design of the 3rd and 4th generation Indian National Satellite System (INSAT). He led the project to establish the Master Control Facility (MCF) for the INSAT. Nilamani also played a key role in enabling the efficient utilization of the INSAT satellite system for telecommunications, broadcasting, navigation, search and rescue, and disaster management activities across India.
Educated in India and Germany, Nilamani holds a Master’s in Electrical Communication Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. Following his graduation from IISc, he was awarded the DAAD fellowship to pursue advanced research in Germany.
Nilamani is a Fellow of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE), India and a Member of the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), USA. He served as the Chairman of IETE (Gujarat, India) for two years.
Nilamani has worked as a Consultant to Indian industries for hi-tech manufacturing and marketing of payload components and SatCom earth stations. He has authored several technical papers and chaired technical sessions in conferences. He has been invited as an expert to countries such as Canada, USA, Japan, UK, Germany, Kuwait, France and Peru. Nilamani has also been a Faculty Member at the United Nations Centre for Space Science and Technology Education for the Asia-Pacific region.
