Barbara is the Co-Founder and Partner of LIQUIFER Systems Group (LSG), an architectural firm based in Vienna, Austria. LSG works on client as well as self-initiated projects in the fields of experimental architectural interfaces, (outer) space architecture and conventionally programmed architecture. In addition to being a practicing architect, Barbara lectures and publishes regularly in the field of both earth and space architecture.
Barbara worked as a space architect, being responsible for the interior design, on NASA’s BIOPLEX Project (Earth test bed for a human mission to Mars) at the Johnson Space Centre in Houston.
At NASA Johnson Space Centre, Barbara worked on the interior design of the NASA BioPLEX, an earth based test bed for simulating human missions to Mars. She also led a feasibility study of a 200 M € integrated planetary exploration simulation facility for the European Space Agency (ESA). Other ESA projects where she served as an expert in (outer) space architecture include the Human Mission to Mars Study and the ExoMars Rover Study for robotic exploration. Most recently, Barbara led a project, under contract to Thales Alenia Space and ESA. The project was part of the top-level Architecture Study of the European Exploration Strategy and led to the design of RAMA, a pressurized rover for Moon/Mars exploration.
Barbara’s portfolio of earth architecture projects include, among others, the VISITAIR Centre at the Vienna International Airport, the reconstruction of female cultural institution EGA in Vienna, exhibition architectures such as Raumstation Skylab 5, and Smart Environment. The latter was about design processes and digital aesthetics of intelligent products in the Loos-house in Vienna
Barbara has studied in Vienna, London, Los Angeles and Strasbourg. She has a degree in Architecture from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, where she studied with the famous architect Wolf. D. Prix of Coop Himmelb(l)au. She also has a Master’s from the International Space University (ISU) in Strasbourg and a PhD in (outer) space architecture from the University of Technology, Vienna.
Barbara has won numerous awards and prizes in competitions. She is a member of the Dutch chamber of Architects, the IG-Architecture and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Space Architecture Technical Committee (SATC). |
