Semcon is a global technology development company with business at 40 sites on three continents. Founded in 1980 in Sweden, and listed on NASDAQ OMX Nordic Exchange, Semcon merged with IVM Automotive and Caran in 2007. The Group’s largest operations are in Sweden, Germany, UK and Brazil, with a growing operation in India and China.
The Group is active in engineering services and product information and is organized into three business areas: Automotive R&D, Design & Development and Informatic. The Group has around 3,000 employees and annual sales of around SEK 3.3 billion in 2008. The Group operates in development-intensive industries such as Automotive (68%), Telecom (8%) & Manufacturing Industries (24%).
Semcon's 3-decades of experience in the automotive industry translates well into the design, fabrication and testing of human space systems for transportation, habitation and exploration. Central to this is German engineering and Swedish knowledge and tradition in the field of ergonomics, Human Machine Interaction (HMI) and industrial design.
From 1999 to 2001 a team from Sweden was responsible for the human factors engineering analysis in the development of the Cupola, a unique habitable module for the orbiting International Space Station (ISS). The Cupola element was jointly developed by the European Space Agency (ESA), NASA and the Italian aerospace company Alenia Spazio (now called Thales Alenia Space). High-fidelity mock-up demonstrations and Virtual Reality CUBE visualizations with astronauts were carried out as part of the ergonomic simulations. Dr. Anders Sundin, an expert in Ergonomics and HMI Design, led this project.
